Korean girls seem to have no problem dealing with conflict publicly whereas Japanese girls will generally try to avoid drawing negative attention to themselves out of fear of being judged by others. In my five years in Japan I can't recall a single incident where I openly saw Japanese girls/women arguing, but in my one year in Seoul multiple times I saw girls and especially ahjumna (middle-aged ladies) publicly quarreling with others or their significant other, mainly in cafes and in the streets.

Korean men are quite thoughtful and oftentimes held my purse for me or insisted on paying my share even if it wasn’t a date. I’ve only had one Korean boyfriend, but he basically paid for everything despite my protests. If my ex is any indication of common Korean male behavior, that may be why some Korean girls tend to expect their boyfriends to pay whereas Japanese girls will offer to pay depending on the situation and the financial status of the boyfriend (with my Japanese boyfriends, I usually paid 50% of the time). In general it is considered rude to not at least show signs of willingness to pay in Japan, especially if you’re not dating. On the other hand my Korean teacher told me of her friend who was left by her Western boyfriend due to the fact that he could no longer keep up with paying for all her meals.

How frequently a Japanese girl will contact her boyfriend really varies depending on the girl. Some girls might send messages nonstop while others may only do so once in a blue moon. However, it seems to be the cultural norm for Korean girls to text and call their boyfriends throughout the day. I remember being surprised when various Korean guy friends and girl friends told me that a lack of messaging most likely means that your significant other is cheating on you. So if you're dating a Korean girl, you should make a point to send a good morning and good night text and check in on them frequently in between.

Social Interaction

Korean girls are more likely to talk to strangers than Japanese girls. I have had Korean girls randomly talk to me or compliment me on what I was wearing in the streets, while on the other hand the only time Japanese girls have talked to me is if they are working and trying to sell me something or give me tissue paper. They are generally not used to being talked to by strangers either. Once my Americanized aunt saw a girl on a train with a beautiful scarf and complimented her on it, and the girl in return gave my aunt a very stern look and tightly clutched her scarf as if she thought my aunt was planning on stealing it.

Korean girls can be quite refreshingly (and at times brutally) honest. If you ask them "Do I look fat in this dress?" and they say no, you can pretty much rest assured that in their eyes you indeed do not look fat. If they like something, they'll tell you. If they don't like something, they'll also tell you, even if you're not close or even if you're complete strangers. Case in point: once a Korean lady came up to me in a supermarket, buttoned up my shirt saying I should cover up, and left. (In my defense I was aiming for sporty casual, not slutty). On the other hand, Japanese girls tend to sugarcoat the truth out of fear of hurting the other person's feelings. We even have a saying “嘘も方便 (uso mo houben)”, basically meaning "lying is bad but at times necessary for the greater good".

Beauty Ideals

Korean girls seem to consider a natural look more beautiful while in Japan many girls prefer dyeing their hair. Besides celebrities, I barely saw girls with hair colors other than black during my one year in Seoul, but in Tokyo the majority of the girls I saw have dyed their hair in various shades of blonde/brown. I believe this is mainly due to a strong media influence that idolizes Western female celebrities. I also feel that the probability of seeing girls with extremely natural or no make-up and/or in comfortable sweats is much higher in Korea.

That being said, ironically the rate of plastic surgery is higher in Korea than in Japan, although to be fair, the exact numbers are hard to calculate due to the amount of surgery tourists that Korea receives. (See: The New Yorker: Why is South Korea the world’s plastic-surgery capital?) The most common surgery hands down would be the double-eyelid surgery. I’ve seen multiple Koreans that have had it done, including 2 of my friends. One of those two received this surgery as her middle school graduation gift, and she said it was quite normal for parents to grant their daughters these surgeries upon graduating high school. On the other hand, I can’t recall seeing a single Japanese female that has. This surgery is much more financially unattainable in Japan, and therefore eyelid-tape is used as a cheap and temporary alternative.
